Sicily features excellent highways (look for the green road signs) and Taormina can be reached by car from every main Italian City. From northern Italy one can drive along highway A1 through Naples and Salerno; then from Salerno (the Amalfi coast & Capri area) drive along the panoramic free highway A3 in the direction of Reggio Calabria. Take exit "Villa S. Giovanni - Sicilia", then go to the harbor. From the harbor take one of the ferries which run very frequently. The "Caronte" company is the most recommended. (Park and lock your car on the ferry and enjoy a fantastic ride from the sun-deck, it is very safe!) You can connect to the mainland of Sicily (Messina) 24 hours a day. Returning from the war when it was over my father made this passage by hitching a ride on a boat full of fisherman by bartering his baptismal necklace in exchange for the ride. Once you arrive at the port of Messina, if you have time, stop and try the famous refreshing "granita" (ices), a typical specialty of the city. Once in Messina, take highway A18 in the direction of Catania driving with the beautiful coastline on your left for about 30 minutes, and then take the exit for "Taormina". If you are coming from Catania, take highway A18 in the direction of Messina and take the exit for "Taormina". If you are coming from Palermo take highway A19 to Catania and then take highway A18 in the direction of Messina exiting at "Taormina".
From the Bus Terminal (About a 10 minute walk) continue to follow "Via Luigi Pirandello" until you arrive at the intersection of Porta Messina (this is a large stone arch). You will make a right turn on "Via Costantino Patricio" and following the old wall of the city for about 30 meters on your right you will find another arch, "L'arco antico dei Cappuccini". Pass through the arch and you will be on "Via dietro Cappuccini". You will follow this via bearing to your left once you pass the church of S.Antonio until you find our sign (look high up) on your left. Follow the steps up to the Guest House and you will find me waiting for you with a refreshing welcome drink. From the Railroad Station it will take about 40 minutes on foot. It is a long and tiring trip but not impossible, in fact once you exit the train station walking about 200 meters to the right you will find the steps that take you to Taormina Centro (1000 steps?). At the end of the steps, if you don't have a coronary in the middle of the steps, you will have arrived soaking wet from perspiring at "Via Roma". Following up "Via Di Giovanni" you will reach Piazza V. Emanuele. From here going to your right you will be on Corso Umberto (the main street) which you will follow to Porta Messina (the large stone arch). Passing through the arch you will make a left on "Via Costantino Patricio". Follow along the old wall of the city until you find another smaller arch on your right "L'arco antico dei Cappuccini". When you pass through the arch you will find yourself on "Via dietro Cappuccini". Follow this via bearing to your left once you pass the church of S.Antonio until you find our sign (look high up) on your left. Follow the steps up to the Guest House and I will immediately come to your rescue with a refreshing welcome drink. |
